Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Maximalist” by Baths from the 2010 album Cerulean on Anticon.
It’s been only a short time since anyone has heard anything off Cerulean, the Baths debut which released only this week but is already getting internet attention from the press for being Anticon’s first LA area artist, and rightfully so. Will Wiesenfeld, San Fernando Valley musician and one-man electronic pop outfit, is a showman on the mixing board. He bounces around and works the knobs with rhythm and finesse.
One of many fantastic tracks of the album, “Maximalist” is at the minimum, chillwave. Gauzy overtones and laid back vibes layer with funk, the dulcet vocals trickle in between cutout beats breathing in an out signifying unexpected signs of life: A chest cavity collapsing and distending.
Since the age of four, Wiesenfeld has lived a musical existence from convincing his parents to enroll him in piano lessons, to mixing and recording his own tracks at thirteen. It was then that he decided to learn more instruments. The viola. The guitar. The contra bass. Then evolved into the moniker Post-Foetus. He was invited on tour with Daedelus. Inspiration struck, and Baths was born.
