Review Revue Royal Crescent Mob – SNOB

As someone who, at a certain time in his life, was totally into the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Fishbone, two of the bands namechecked in connection with the Columbus, Ohio-based Royal Crescent Mob, I can’t believe I never heard about or got into these guys. (I think I even had a tape or two by 24-7 Spyz, another musical reference point.) But then, of course, they were Columbus Ohio-based and never quite as high profile as any of those groups. It’s sort of surprising to see a bunch of college radio DJs in Seattle get so into a goofy funk rock band from Columbus. I guess it was a different time…

Interestingly, RCM bass player Harold “Happy” Chichester went on to collaborate with indie cult hero (and fellow Ohioan) Greg Dulli in both Afghan Whigs and The Twilight Singers, and is now working as a solo artist.

“6 songs on side A previously released which we have and the rest is new plus a few covers. Most of side 2 recorded ‘live’ I bet, but the first + last songs on side 2 show the funky side or RCB [sic] while the rest reveal their fascination with country, country-rock and folk elements. You figure it.”

“Immigrant Song was a fun thing to play.”

“This makes two presents to the world from Columbus, Ohio… (I’m the other by the way… Ack! Ack!”

“‘Two Sisters’!”

“Yes! The chorus sounds like somethin’ right out of the Ohio Players song book. Cool.”

DON’T miss their live show – it’s ROYAL.”
