Interview with Julien Schaerer, Watch Director & A

BC: Thank you for taking the time to speak with Hodinkee.com.  First things first coach outlet online, how did you become involved with Antiquorum and watches in general?

JS: Watches were always my passion.  At the age of 16 I went to work for another auction house simply as a help showing clients watches before auctions.  After college, I was working for an auction house in Geneva, and that is where I was headhunted to work at Antiquorum.
BC: Where does Antiquorum find such valuable and interesting pieces?

JS: We typically work with private collectors who have seen similar items to their own featured online and or in other auctions.  They then reach out to us and we take the pieces on consignment if we feel the item has true value.
BC: What specifically creates the demand and value for the pieces sold at Antiquorum?

JS:  Well the amount of collectors supporting a particular community plays a dramatic role in demand.  Of course, rarity is the ultimate determinant of value.
BC:  You just had your summer auction, how do you feel that went?

JS:  I think it went very well, people are starting to view watches as an alternative investment when economic conditions are less than certain.
BC: Have you seen a spike in interest in vintage watches recently?

JS:  It is hard to call it a spike coach bags outlet, but everyone reacts to changes in the economy differently.  These auctions are certainly a luxury business and all luxuries are affected in economic downturns.  That being said, there is considerable interest in our watches, and like I said earlier, many people are seeing vintage and rare watches as an alternative investment when markets may not be as reliable.
BC:  We at Hodinkee loves watches with stories behind them, do you have any recent pieces that come to mind with really great histories?

JS:  At our Rolex Sports Watch Sale, we sold two pieces that have great stories.  The first was the very last Military issued Rolex Explorer.  The German Airforce was looking for a watch that was easily readable at night by their pilots so they ordered about 100 Explorers.  This was the first true military-issued Rolex ever to appear in auction, and to make it even more special cheap coach bags, it was accompanied by actual decommission papers from 1982.
