My pre-tour shopping stop is: Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn. It’s a vintage shop with tons of hidden gems.

Although she’s opened for Snoop Dogg and Ludacris, performed on late night TV, and released a handful of mixtapes and EPs, nothing gets San Francisco-based rapper K.Flay excited like a pair of Nike high-tops. While touring this spring, the Stanford graduate (real name: Kristine Flaherty) made extra room in her suitcase to bring along some kicks. The one downside? It limits what else she can pack. “I recycle outfits like crazy, since I don’t have that many clothes—I’m a clothing-on-repeat kind of girl,” she admits.

My personal style is: casual but distinctive. Designers model their men’s wares nearly nearly a full month before women’s ready-to-wear hits the New York runways in the second week of February.  Of course, one can never predict with 100% certainty that a trend will transcend the genders, but, having just returned from a fast and furious Autumn Winter 2012 season in Milan—where we saw some very directional and very strong decisions by the most influential designers—I think we can make a decent case.

Tailoring: For so many seasons it seemed like we couldn’t get away from the boxy cuts and then slowly but surely designers made their suits tighter and sleeker. Finally, this season it looks like suits are back to being superbly tailored, much the same way that womenswear is reverting to the lady-like silhouettes and cuts that define femininity.  There was nary a baggy leg Coach Factory Outlet, drop crotch, or slouchy blazer in sight. Dolce, Bottega, and Ferragamo, who up until last season were still being generous in their cuts, brought everything closer to the body.  No one was quite as tailored as Burberry Prorsum; it looks like it’d take a good greasing to slip into the brand’s collection.

Consider it common knowledge among the fashion community that when it comes to predicting trends in womenswear, the menswear collections in Milan and Paris can act as a sort of editor’s crystal ball.

Prints: As far as prints go, Miuccia really demonstrated a keen eye for pattern in the micro-print fabrics of brown, burgundy, mustard and red of Prada’s collection.  Her’s was among the strongest of the season—and not just because celebrities like Gary Oldman, Jamie Bell, Adrien Brody and William Dafoe walked in the show. Canali followed suit with a similar bent and a strong use of stripes. Even at Missoni—the pattern masters—size was dialed back for a less abrasive, but more intricate visual.

There were reiterations of past season’s usual suspects: shearling, great leather Coach Factory Outlet, varsity jackets and cropped outerwear.  The need for a sharp overcoat in a man’s wardrobe has never been so clear.  Those on display in nearly every Italian-shown collection were rich in fabric, impeccably tailored and practically screaming, “It’s time to grow up.”  As for what’s new, here’s what the boys were wearing that the girls might like too:

Capes, cloaks and cape-like coats: As soon as Dolce & Gabbana’s runway show started, I thought to myself, “Let’s go to the opera! 200 years ago!” Yes, it was all 19th century romanticism for Stefano and Domenico, and included in their past-is-present collection were flowing hooded cloaks fitting for any Phantom. Alexander McQueen, Ermenegildo Zegna, and Calvin Klein all had their own variations (Mugler just showed them in Paris as well), many with that most necessary modern day update: sleeves.

Velvet: At a re-see appointment one afternoon in Milan, a PR rep for the label had to get real: “Is everyone really doing velvet again? I feel like it’s my senior year of college again.” The answer—much to my colleague’s chagrin—is yes, yes we are. While velvet hasn’t entirely faded out in years past, it returned in full force for next fall. Trousers and blazers were the most common velvet garment, but where it seemed most fresh this season was in…

Brocade: Sometimes it wasn’t just a cape coat at Dolce—it was a brocade cape coat at Dolce. The materials were luxe and the gold, silver and jeweled ornamentation on the blazers, jackets, shoes, and, yes, even socks got fancy. McQueen and Bottega Veneta showed more accessible interpretation of this trend, simply running a raised embellishment along a blazer lapel or the edge of a sleeve. Pony hair: To be more specific, burgundy pony hair. On a tunic at McQueen, an overcoat at Z Zegna, a blazer at Canali, and nearly all of the above—even a full suit— at Emporio Armani. It’s shimmery and totally glam—just in case that’s your thing.

Anna Dello Russo to Make Funny Hats for H&M

Why Leith Clark Was Styling Tavi Via Skype

ELLE: You, Melissa, Tavi, Maximilla, Leith—what brought everyone together to work on this film?
SSF: Maximilla and I have been directing films together for about 12 years. Melissa is an old friend and I’ve met Tavi a few times—it actually looks like I’ll be writing for Rookie magazine, which is super exciting—so it was just one of these convergences of all these smart, interesting women. I was coming back from SSXW with The Citizens Band and my husband was working in LA so I just happened to be in town and it all worked out. The Sunday we shot in LA was the coldest, rainiest day I had ever experienced there and magically it really worked for the mood and tone of the film. Leith had a really clear vision about how she wanted to style the whole thing. It was really funny because she actually had a visa problem at the last minute and so she styled over Skype.  I was nervous about it, but it really worked!

ELLE: The look and feel of the film is sort of creepy and romantic. What inspired that very specific tone of it?
SSF: Max and I love the Czech new wave. We’re total nerds about it. We used to have film nights we called “Czech Please” and had all of our girlfriends over. Vera Chytilova and Milos Forman are two of our favorite directors.

ELLE: Yeah, it sort of felt like at some point, when no one was looking, Tavi had suddenly became a woman.
SSF: When we chose that song, one thing I was actually really nervous about was that there were lyrics that I thought were inappropriate and she didn’t end up singing those. Like I said, I think I went in much more overprotective than I needed to be. Her “Style Like U” video came out the same day we were shooting and I went home and watched it that night. One of my favorite things she said was something about how she woke up one morning and just wanted to be pretty and felt nervous or insecure about saying that. I think for a lot of women there is this fake conflict of ‘Am I allowed to be pretty but also smart? Am I allowed to be a feminist and also like clothes and beauty products?’ I think we’re finally at a place where that’s truly OK. And she’s right at that age where you start changing. It was pretty poignant to be filming that day and to feel part of capturing this moment she’s having.

When we reached Flicker at home, she was in the middle of bath time with her kids, Arrow Marie and Wilder Stauning, and packing for a ten-day vacation in France. Passing off duties to her husband, Flicker spoke to Elle.com about redefining the song’s meaning to fit her modern muse, shooting on an unusually cold day in LA, and having Lula Magazine’s Leith Clark style via Skype!

ELLE: What did you think of Melissa’s collection for fall?
SSF: I always love everything she does. I’ve worked with her now on and off for three or four years on various little projects and because of that I’m lucky enough to have a lot of Wren in my life. I really wear it a lot. We’re leaving tonight for a ten-day trip and I feel like half my suitcase is filled with Melissa’s clothes. What I love about it is that there are always a lot of prints that are interchangeable. You can take two different patterns and mix and match. ELLE: What are you working on next?
SSF: The Citizens Band has a lot going on. We’re doing a lot of stuff leading up to the election. We have a big surprise happening at the end of the summer. ELLE: What was it like directing Tavi?
SSF: She’s incredible. I’m really trying to remember people from when I was a teen or my early 20s who were that intelligent and driven and I can’t think of any. I have a five year-old daughter and it just makes me feel really excited about the future of young women and female role models. As a mom, I walked in feeling really protective of her. But by the middle of the day I realized that she was fine and in fact probably knows more than I do.

Interview with Julien Schaerer, Watch Director & A

BC: Thank you for taking the time to speak with Hodinkee.com.  First things first coach outlet online, how did you become involved with Antiquorum and watches in general?
    
JS: Watches were always my passion.  At the age of 16 I went to work for another auction house simply as a help showing clients watches before auctions.  After college, I was working for an auction house in Geneva, and that is where I was headhunted to work at Antiquorum.
BC: Where does Antiquorum find such valuable and interesting pieces?

JS: We typically work with private collectors who have seen similar items to their own featured online and or in other auctions.  They then reach out to us and we take the pieces on consignment if we feel the item has true value.
BC: What specifically creates the demand and value for the pieces sold at Antiquorum?

JS:  Well the amount of collectors supporting a particular community plays a dramatic role in demand.  Of course, rarity is the ultimate determinant of value.
BC:  You just had your summer auction, how do you feel that went?

JS:  I think it went very well, people are starting to view watches as an alternative investment when economic conditions are less than certain. 
BC: Have you seen a spike in interest in vintage watches recently?
